White only at work
The very conditions that led to the formation of the Coloured population were made illegal in apartheid South Africa by the Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act (1949) and the Immorality Amendment Act (1950). This helped to reinforce a Coloured identity based on race as one separate from whites, blacks and Indians for a diverse population with a multiplicity of identities. What I always wonder about the whites who were really coloured? What of the coloureds who were classified white? Three of my mother’s father’s brothers were classified white. Two of them married coloured women? They only held their white id card for work purposes but for all other purposes they were coloured? What are they? Are their children coloured? You would be surprised.
